BIGU- DOLAKHA, NEPAL
Bigu is a former village development committee in Dolakha District in the northeastern part of Nepal, a six hours drive from Kathmandu the capital of Nepal. At the 18 different locations of Bigu at relatively high altitude (1800-3000 meter), The Green Intelligence in collaboration with Bigu Rural Municipality aims to plant around 10,000 Himalayan Yew (listed in IUCN Red List). Alongside the Himalayan Yew, we will also be planting other understory species, such as Chirayito, Satuwa, Dhasingare, and Titepati, further enriching the ecological diversity of the region.
Taxus wallichiana, commonly known as Himalayan Yew, is a species of yew, native to the Himalayas and parts of south-east Asia and grows on altitudes ranging from 1800-3000 meters. The species has a variety of uses in traditional medicine. Taxus wallichiana is also a source of the chemical precursors to the anticancer drug paclitaxel (Taxol). It is currently classified as endangered by the IUCN. It has been subject to heavy exploitation for its leaves and bark across most of its range through the Himalayas and western China.
Working closely with the Bigu Rural Municipality, we have identified 18 strategic locations within the community, including health posts, schools, and monasteries, where these trees will be planted. By focusing on public lands, we aim to enhance the overall accessibility and conservation of this endangered species. Together with the landowners and the Bigu Rural Municipality, we are dedicated to finding innovative solutions that balance biodiversity conservation and sustainable harvesting of the Himalayan Yew. The end goal is to make a significant difference in the fight against species extinction and create a greener, healthier planet alongside generating additional income for the communities in the long run.
